Artist, freelance photographer and ASE Certified auto mechanic, Sarah Lyon has had a passion for understanding how things work from a young age. Her creative endeavors include several solo cross-country motorcycle trips documenting women mechanics working in their shops, and creating a cast bronze sculpture out of her old motorcycle boots. Based in Louisville, KY, and Joshua Tree, CA, Sarah’s artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally, receiving support from the Kentucky Foundation for Women, ArtPlace America, and Creative Capital. Since 2016 she has taught her Basic Auto Care Clinic at The Women’s Center for Creative Work, Paramount Studios, Ebell of Los Angeles, Pieter Performance Space, A-Z West, and as individual lessons.
The Basic Auto Care Clinic was fun and approachable. It gave me some much needed knowledge, confidence and hands on practice to approach my own vehicle’s care.

Sarah did a great job of demystifying the way that engines work and should be maintained and she provided lots of encouragement and guidance as we tried out the skills we were learning on our own vehicles. Not only did Sarah do a great job of sharing technical information and tools, but she created a relaxed, welcoming environment where participants weren’t embarrassed to ask “dumb” questions and could truly learn. I’m so grateful for the opportunity!

Learning to change your own oil is the ultimate DIY! So grateful for the valuable skills I’ve picked up from Sarah’s hands-on classes.
